Tutorials

I can’t be everywhere. Even if I’d like to be. And stories are so often best told by the people who are in them. Not by some white guy from far away, even with the best intentions. So this tutorial series is about giving people in human rights, humanitarian and other non-profit organisations the tools they need to take their own photos. Without much time, without lots of resources, and without fancy equipment. I hope they are useful.

Trauma informed photography

The fifth video in this series is about how we can safely and ethically take photographs when working with people in situations of vulnerability or who have experienced trauma.

Thoughts on camera equipment

The sixth video in this series is a reflection on camera equipment and the things that I think are maybe more important for taking great photos.

Composition & perspective

The second video in this series is about how we can use light, perspective and composition to tell more compelling human rights stories.

Ethics & consent

The third video in this series is about how we can do a better job of managing ethics and consent when working with people in situations of vulnerability.

Meetings & conferences

The fourth video in this series is about how we can take better images in meetings and during conferences, including with just a phone camera.

Planning & objectives

This first video in the series is about how setting objectives and doing a little bit of planning can help you capture way better images of your work.
